Between Names

Уехал из России в декабре 1917-го уже мировой звездой — и как композитор, и как пианист-виртуоз. By the time he left Russia in December 1917, he was already a global figure — both as a composer and as a touring virtuoso. For the next fourteen years he wrote no solo piano music at all: not a single piece in the genre that had made him a household name on both sides of the Atlantic. The silence ended in the summer of 1931, on a piece of land he had bought near Hertenstein on Lake Lucerne. He named the villa Senar, from the first letters of Sergei, Natalia and Rachmaninoff. The album includes both his last year in Russia and his first summer in Switzerland.

Born in Kremenchuk, then in the Poltava Governorate of the Russian Empire. His exact birth year is not certain — likely around 1893. He studied with Glazunov and Yesipova at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Around 1907 his family emigrated to the United States, fleeing the pogroms. Lev Ornshteyn became Leo Ornstein. By the mid‑1910s he was the leading enfant terrible of the transatlantic avant‑garde — writing dense tone‑clusters decades before Cage. His March 1914 London concert nearly ended in a riot. In the early 1920s he turned in the opposite direction, toward a denser, more romantic, more interior language. He withdrew from the concert stage by forty, but kept composing until 1990. He lived for more than a hundred years.

Born in Geneva. He studied with Jaques‑Dalcroze in Geneva, Ysaÿe in Brussels, and later in Frankfurt and Munich. Professor at the Geneva Conservatory from 1911. In 1916 he travelled to the United States to conduct Maud Allan's dance tour; the company fell apart, and Bloch stayed on in Ohio. In 1920 he took over the Cleveland Institute of Music. The year 1923 was a creative explosion — a series of major piano pieces, among them ten miniatures dedicated to his daughters Suzanne and Lucienne and to their Cleveland teachers. In 1930 Bloch returned to Switzerland and France for several years, but the rise of Nazism forced him back to the United States, where he lived from 1939 until his death.
